It's been awhile since Doc Sportello has seen his ex-girlfriend. Suddenly out of nowhere she shows up with a story about a plot to kidnap a billionaire land developer whom she just happens to be in love with. Easy for her to say. It's the tail end of the psychedelic sixties in L.A., and Doc knows that "love" is another of those words going around at the moment, like "trip" or "groovy," except that this one usually leads to trouble. Despite which he soon finds himself drawn into a bizarre tangle of motives and passions whose cast of characters includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, a tenor sax player working undercover, an ex-con with a swastika tattoo and a fondness for Ethel Merman, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up
by some dentists.

In this lively yarn, Thomas Pynchon, working in an unaccustomed genre, provides a classic illustration of the principle that if you can remember the sixties, you weren't there . . . or . . . if you were there, then you . . . or, wait, is it . . .

２００９年夏、ピンチョンの新作？

今年の９月ごろにウィリアム・ギャディス愛読者のメーリングリストで流れた情報によると、ピンチョンは２００９年（来年！）８月に新作を出す予定とのこと。発信者はギャディスの研究書なども出している偉い研究者で、ネタ元はペンギン社の社員（『逆光』の情報をいち早く教えてくれた人らしい）。４００ページほどの分量で、内容はノワールな探偵小説。でも、ゴジラを扱うＳＦと予告されていたものが実際に出てみると『ヴァインランド』だったり、ということもあるので、この種の話はかなり割り引いて聞かないといけないかも。でも楽しみ。新潮社さん、ぜひ全集に含めてね。ピンチョンはきっと『逆光』と並行してこれを書いていたんだろうなあ。『Ｖ．』の直後に『ロット４９』を出したときもたぶん、一つ書き終わって次を書いたのではなくて、並行して書いていたんじゃないかと思います。分からないけど。

アエンデ隕石

メキシコ合衆国のチワワ州にはなぜか隕石の落下が多いそうです。フランクがその破片を拾い、携帯していると、誰かの声が聞こえる。誰の声？
氷州石、いん石、ツングースカ事件。つながっているようなつながっていないような。

ピンチョンが切手収集の趣味を持っているかどうかは知らないけれど、切手ネタが『ロット４９』をはじめ、いくつかの小説で使われていることは事実。きっと「無政府主義を象徴するエラー切手」（資本主義の象徴たる輸送機関がひっくり返っているから）とユーボール・アウストが呼ぶこれらの切手のどれかをＰは持っているんじゃないでしょうか。eBayなどで調べてみると、確かに未使用のものはすごく高価。消印があると安い。模造品の「逆さまジェニー」なんかはもっと安い。
